John Taylor was established in July, 2000 by Lynn Surr, owner and cosmetologist. Lynn has been in the cosmetology business for 34 years. She has worked in many different environments, ranging from department store and privately owned salons, to a single chair salon in her home as her guests held her baby while she was styling their hair, and finally 14 years of owning another local salon.
In 1998 Lynn sought out a more personal environment where clients could come and be spoiled and pampered; a tranquil environment that made beauty, health, and relaxation paramount. "I became curious about the Spa industry because I was reading about it EVERYWHERE. It hadn't made it to the Quad Cities yet and I thought this area needed one," Lynn commented, "after all, being a baby-boomer myself, I was looking to use the services that a spa offers!" Lynn became voracious for information. She researched the spa industry for over a year and decided that the people of the Quad Cities deserved the treatment only the bigger cities offered. If no one else was going to open a spa, she had to do it! So, John Taylor was born. A company founded on experience, hard work, and well deserved luxury for all its patrons.
John Taylor is a member of the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce
Lynn had a natural talent for hairstyling that friends and family recognized in her early teen years. It was no question what direction she would take her career. By the time she was just 18 years old, she had graduated early from High School and completed her cosmetology training at Stewart’s School of Hairstyling in Davenport, Iowa. Her career was 2-fold. She loved all aspects of hairstyling but had the strong will to be an entrepreneur like her father had always been through her childhood and still is today.
After many successful years of hairdressing and ownership of small salons, Lynn was ready to make the BIG step into the Salon & Day Spa business. Hence, John Taylor was born in 2000! But like any newborn, the business needed to be nurtured, trained and directed into the “comfortable luxury” Salon & Spa that it is today. In December 2008, a second location opened in Jumer’s Casino Hotel that bestows the same atmosphere.
Aside from John Taylor offering great services to its guests, Lynn also wanted her business to be a great place to work for her staff members. Her philosophy is to hire nice people and teach them to do the rest! The staff is rewarded with many benefits for education, retirement, health & dental, vacation and Staff Service benefits so they, too, may enjoy the great services they provide.
After 36 successful years in the beauty business, Lynn plans on stepping back a little (o.k. a lot) and giving her 2 talented daughters the opportunity to grow and develop John Taylor into their vision for the future.
